　　1. If it doesn’t rain within the next few weeks, the crops will have to be watered if they are to survive.

　　要是未来几星期还不下雨，这些农作物要想存活的话，就必须得浇水了。

　　解析：我们看到，前一个if从句采用了一般现在时态的谓语形式doesn’t rain，而后一个if从句采用了将来时态的谓语形式are to survive，它们与主句谓语部分will have to be watered的时间先后顺序应该如下：首先是第一个if从句的doesn’t rain，然后是主句的be watered，最后是第二个if从句的are to survive。也就是说，三者之间应该是“不下雨—必须浇水—才能存活”这样一个逻辑关系。

　　“if + be to do”条件句用法特点总结

　　大家对于“if + be to do”句型可能比较陌生，该句型具有如下两个特点，下面笔者来具体分析。

　　特点一：主句先发生，表条件；从句后发生，表结果。这一特点上文反复说过，在此不再赘述。

　　特点二：主句谓语通常含有“不得不”“必须”等含义，常见的谓语包括will have to do、need to do、must do、be necessary等。

　　我们来看下面的例句，这是2000年考研英语真题第五篇阅读理解文章开头的一段话。

　　2. If ambition is to be well regarded, the rewards of ambition—wealth, distinction, control over one’s destiny—must be deemed worthy of the sacrifices made on ambition’s behalf. If the tradition of ambition is to have vitality, it must be widely shared; and it especially must be highly regarded by people who are themselves admired, the educated not least among them.

　　个人的雄心如果想获得尊重，那么它的回报——财富、荣誉、对命运的掌控——必须被视作是值得为之牺牲的。胸怀雄心这一传统若想焕发生机，必须得到广泛的认可，特别是必须能够被那些本身就受人尊敬的人士所推崇，尤其是受过良好教育的人士。

　　这里两个if从句里面的谓语都采用了be to do的形式(is to be和is to have)，对应的主句谓语都含有情态动词must。为什么会有这种对应关系呢？

　　其实，这涉及be to do这个结构的意义。该结构往往表示比较强烈的感情色彩，有加强语气的意味，相当于情态动词must或should，可以翻译成“一定得……”，所以与be to do呼应的主句往往会含有情态动词must或will have to，从而构成了“must/will have to do ... if ... be to do”的句子结构，表示“如果……一定得怎么样，那么……首先必须得怎么样”。

　　我们再来看几个例句。

　　3. If humans are to survive as a species, we must address environmental issues now.

　　人类若要继续生存下去，就必须从现在开始处理环境问题。

　　4. The first two must be equal for all who are being compared, if any comparison in terms of intelligence is to be made.

　　如果一定要从智力方面进行比较的话，那么对所有被比较者来说，前两个因素必须是一样的。
